Sue Bird, a total baller with five Olympic gold medals, and Megan Rapinoe, a soccer queen with one Olympic gold and one bronze medal, are such a power couple. 

They crossed paths at the 2016 Rio Olympics, hit it off, and decided to tie the knot in 2020. Their love story is all about being proud and standing up for LGBTQ+ rights.

Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black (Diving and Screenwriting)

Tom Daley, the British diver who clinched gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, is in a marriage with Dustin Lance Black, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter. 

They have been in a relationship since 2013, got engaged in 2015, and tied the knot in 2017. The pair shares a son and actively support LGBTQ+ rights.

Cheryl Maas and Stine Brun Kjeldaas (Snowboarding)

Cheryl Maas, a snowboarder from the Netherlands, was married to Stine Brun Kjeldaas, a snowboarder from Norway and an Olympic silver medalist. 

The couple was together for many years but eventually divorced, and they have two daughters. They are both outspoken supporters of LGBTQ+ rights and representation in sports.

Kate Richardson-Walsh and Helen Richardson-Walsh (Field Hockey)

Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh, British field hockey players, achieved Olympic gold and bronze medals as teammates. 

They were members of the gold-winning team at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Married since 2013, the couple remains active in advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports.

Brittney Griner, a WNBA standout and Olympic champion, tied the knot with fellow WNBA athlete Glory Johnson. 

Despite their rocky relationship leading to a quick divorce, their marriage shed light on same-sex relationships in the world of professional sports.

LGBTQ+ Couples in The Olympics 2024

Out of the 150+ queer women and non-binary individuals participating in the Paris Olympics, a remarkable 48 are in relationships with fellow athletes. 

These relationships range from current or former teammates to partners in completely different sports. 

Within this group of 48, there are five couples who will be competing together at the Olympics, as well as seven athletes who are either dating or married to former Olympians.

  • Lea Schuller (Germany) and Lara Vadlau (Austria) (Football and Sailing)

Competing on the world stage gives them the chance to motivate others, stand up for equality, and show that love and success are for everyone. 

By being at the Olympics, they contribute to creating a more inclusive and open-minded sports environment, offering LGBTQ+ youth around the globe positive figures to look up to. 

Their visibility breaks down stereotypes and encourages greater acceptance in society.
