Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert tied the knot in Monterey County, California, on August 26, 2023.
Erbert shared the story of their wedding ceremony, which took place right in front of a majestic mother tree, encircled by numerous smaller trees.
He explained how the smaller trees drop their seeds, creating a protective army of children around the mother tree.
The symbolism behind this was truly beautiful to them. They saw themselves as planting their own seeds, nurturing their family to grow and flourish.
Let’s take a look back at their love story and pray Hayley has a quick recovery so they can go back to living their fairytale.
Before the dating phase
We were shipping this two ways before they started dating. Their chemistry was on full display whenever they danced alongside one another and we kind of jinxed it.
Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert started as dance partners
These two met through dancing back in 2014, they met during Derek’s sister’s show, where Hayley was cast as a dancer.
And sparks started flying after sharing a few dances here and there until they made it official in 2015.
They have been a couple for a long time and always joked about proposing to one another until it finally happened, but we will get to that later.
Who made the first move?
Back in February during an interview on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” Hough spilled the beans about the early days of his relationship with Erbert and shared the story about their first kiss.
It was a romantic and cute moment but here is the twist – it all went down in front of a live audience!
Derek reminisced about their performance on stage when he and Halyey were dancing the rumba when the other dancers started cheering on them ‘Kiss! Kiss!” they shouted.
So, believe it or not, their first kiss actually happened right there on stage,” Derek revealed to Kelly Clarkson.

However, even though they both agree on the circumstances, it seems like they have different memories about who initiated the kiss.
When Kelly Clarkson inquired about who took the first step, Derek and Erbert both blamed each other. “Maybe we both opened the door at the same time?”
Derek questioned, glancing at Erbert, who was sitting in the crowd. Erbert made a facial expression indicating that it wasn’t true.
Eventually, they came to a consensus that Derek was the one who started it all.
2015 – 2018
Erbert became a member of the troupe on Dancing with the Stars in September 2015.
Hough had been a professional on the show since 2007 and won the championship that year. They began dating while filming, but initially kept their relationship private.
Then just a year later Hough revealed that he was in a relationship during an appearance on the Ellen Show.
Hough and Erbert decided to go public with their relationship on Instagram on May 4, 2017, after dating for a few years.
Erbert posted a picture of them dancing together and explained how three years together went by so fast.
Just a couple of weeks later, Erbert celebrated Hough’s birthday by sharing another adorable photo of them.
